There are currently about 220 wood-burning plants across Scotland. By using wood to make heat it is carbon neutral. This means that the carbon that is in the air from the burnt wood is used by the tree to grow. So it is a win win.
A case came up in Nelson that burning wood was causing air pollution, because anybody and everybody was burning wood. To solve the problem the Nelson Fire Chief has issued that if you plan to burn you must come and get a burn permit from him. Last year the Chief gave out 77 burn permits, and the air quality is much better this year.
In Bakersfield, California they have made a law about clean burning. This law states that on curtain days you cannot burn wood in your house. The only exception is if you don’t have natural gas or electric. That is when you can burn. According to the records last winter was the cleanest of the past eight years. There are fines that are issued for burning. Last year there were a total of 36 violations.
In Ashland their hospital is heated by junk wood. 99% of the heat there comes from the wood. Instead of using three gas boilers they are now using one wood boiler. The whole design was designed on a napkin some 27 years ago. In just 30 months the boiler paid for its self.
